Choice Show Horses/Warren Mather

Meet our Board of Directors

Warren Mather – President
Warren first became involved in the Andalusian breed in the early 1980’s while working for Pedro Salas of San Luis Obispo, CA and Mallorca, Spain. He launched Choice Show Horses in 1985 and since then, Choice has accumulated over 150 National Champion- ship Titles. Warren has traveled the world, conducting clinics and showing Andalusian horses in the US, Spain, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

He believes in giving back to the breed and before becoming involved in the Alliance, sat on the board of IALHA and PAALH for many terms. Be- sides contributing as a board member, Warren has also served on many different committees over the course of his career and was very proud to have assisted in organizing the first Canadian Andalusian National Championship Show. He is also a current member of the CAL – AHA Show Committee.

Mr. Mather is thrilled to be involved with the Alliance and has been with the organization since the very beginning, when it was decided by a dedicated group of people that there was a need to unite this wonderful breed. “It has been very rewarding to see the Alliance grow and I am excited for what it will become as we look forward into a new year”.

Warren looks forward to continuing to teach, train, show, breed and love the Andalusian horse for many years to come.

Nancy Latta – Vice President
My Life According to the Horse: From 4 yrs old and on into my early teens, I collected Breyer horses, drew them, rode several stick horses into their early retirement and dreamed about them.

I married my high School Sweetheart, Joseph Latta, a mere 45 years ago and have two wonderful children, Christopher and Amanda. Joe and I moved to the Burbank Rancho neighborhood after marrying and finally, my first horse was a reality–Honey Boy was a palomino quarter horse and he was anything but sweet as honey; for 24 years he sure taught me a lot.

In 1984, I encountered a breed of horse that would change my life forever along with life long friends I met at the training barn of Arnold Hauser. In 1990 with the acquisition of our first Andalusian, Indiscreta, Amandalusian Farm was born. Indiscreta was the first chapter of a wonderful love story between humans and horses of Amandalusian Farm. Sandy Shields entered a few pages into the story after a chance meeting with the famous horse trainer Glenn Randall. 21 years later, we still have Sandy showing, training and managing our horses.

Living my life story with the Andalusian horse in the show ring with Indiscreta, Mayoral LA, Kripton-Seni II, Fabuloso XLI, Orgulloso XLIX and the lovely Afrodita M Suay have given me the desires of my heart and made me a better person by learning patience and perseverance. They have given direction to and bonding for Amanda, Sandy and Joe through their experiences of showing horses over the years. The championships, trophies, and ribbons are but a by-product and were never the goal. Like any love story, all emotions are explored and so goes my life according to the horse. There have been highs and lows but the joy persists through it all. The Lord willing, the story will continue.

Susan Cox – Treasurer
Susan Cox is the “C” in CR Partners, LLC, also known as Corona Real Show Horses. She readily admits that she was born loving horses. But following her father in his career in the US Foreign Service made it difficult to follow through on that obsession. So it was back to riding borrowed horses when she got the chance: she rode rangy Warmbloods in Japan, sturdy little Arabians in Ethiopia, and in Costa Rica she met Andalusians for the first time.

Riding lessons for Christmases and birthdays filled the gaps. In college back in the US, she had the honor of riding under the tutelage of Mrs. Fern Bittner, but then took another hiatus from horses when marriage, raising 3 children, and a long career in the medical field took precedence.

And so it was not until middle age that she finally decided it was time to reconnect with horses. She showed Saddlebreds, Hackney Ponies, and Arabians, and then by chance met a beautiful Arabian- Andalusian named Lone Star Bravio. He was the perfect melding of those two fabulous breeds. And so it started. Now, she and her part- ner breed those lovely Arabians and Andalusians and their crosses, in Lee’s Summit, MO.

Nancy Nathanson – Secretary
A lifetime of passion for the horse. it used to be any horse and basically it still is. However, my soft spot is with the Andalusian. Before beginning full time work in the horse business, I was a successful Long Term Health Care Administrator. This history gave me a really sound medical background and was helpful in the transition to working with and around horses. I have had over 25 years of working full time with training and breeding farms and for the past 20 plus years until November, 2008 I have been a partner with Bruce Howard at The Park, a full service training facility. It was through my partnership with Bruce that I was introduced to the Andalusian horse.

I have always been involved with the detail behind the scenes. Back in the late 1980’s I was asked to be a Secretary for a Carriage Driving Show and that began my second career. Over time I have done Secretary work for Driving, Multi Breed, Friesian, Paso Fino, Saddlebred, Peruvian and Andalusian Shows. I was a member of the USEF A/L Committee from 2000 through 2008 and served as this committees Chair from 2005-2008. I am a member of the USEF Secretary Committee. As Executive Director of the International Friesian Show Horse Association (IFSHA), I serve the USEF Friesian Committee in an advisory capacity. I am proud to say that USEF has voted me one of their Top Ten Secretaries for both 2007 and 2008.
I am delighted to serve the Alliance as a Director and will do my very best to serve well.

Leigh Anne Romans Director
Leigh Anne Romans has had the horse bug since childhood. She became an assistant trainer at age 16, and while still in high school put together a business plan for a horse boarding facility. That plan was put on hold while she attended William Woods University and went on to graduate with a degree in Art. Leigh Anne has had the opportunity to work with the late R.S. Palmer (Saddlebreds) and at Live Oak Arabians, and she has participated in clinics with some of the best saddle seat trainers in the country before finally starting her own training business in 2002.

In 2004 she dusted off that old business plan and became owner and manager of Showtime Equestrian Center in Lee’s Summit, MO, where she oversees the care of over 40 horses. She also continues to work as a professional trainer and has worked with many breeds of horses, with a special emphasis on Arabians & Andalusians. From starting young horses to fine tuning show horses in a variety disciplines including Halter, Performance and Driving, she has taken an impressive number of horses to Regional and National Championships. In the rare moments that she is not doing horse-related things, she likes to indulge in her hobbies of drawing and photography.

Gloria Hennen – Director
Gloria’s fascination with animals, specifically horses, began as a young girl. She has vast experience with equines of all kinds from Miniatures to Zebras, but her most successful ventures have been with the Andalusian breed. In the early 1990’s, Gloria’s fascination with the Andalusian breed took her to California where she and her husband, Dave, found their first Andalusian, and a life long friend, Pat Garrison of the Garrison Ranch.

Since that first colt, Gloria has been very active in the Andalusian breed—starting new Andalusian shows and serving on national boards. She and Dave work side by side for all aspects of the breeding, training and showing end of their involvement with Andalusians. In all aspects of the breed, they have been successful from selecting, conditioning, as well as producing horses that have gone on to win National Championship titles.

Those foals and horses trained by the Hennens have won titles in halter, driving and performance including: Senior Stallion Halter, Junior Stallion Halter, Senior Mare Halter, Open & Amateur Driving divisions, Hunter Pleasure, Country English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, and Open English Pleasure. Gloria’s excitement about Andalusians is contagious! She has introduced many newcomers to the breed and the show ring.

Amanda Latta-Shields – Director
Well, to some “Amandalusian Farm” doesn’t sound too creative because it appears to be a misspelled word. After all, how many people know how to spell Andalusian, let alone try to be creative and add Amanda to it? When I was 11, we bought our first Andalusian mare, Indiscreta and about two years later we fell in love with Mayoral L.A

“Everything happens for a reason” is a common motto amongst the crew of Amandalusian Farm, and with that Mayoral LA (the “winningest horse” in IALHA history with 24 National titles) is a testament to that. A young, beautiful, dark grey, ornery stallion helped blaze the trail for me as a young girl, my family as breeders and the breed as a whole to become more than we thought possible.

Over the years we’ve been lucky enough to have many other amazing horses come into our lives. Fabuloso, Afrodita, Orgulloso and finally, Kripton Seni II, who has taken us to the next level. Not only was he awarded with the United States Equestrian Federation Horse of Year Honor in 2009, he was just recently released as a 2011 Breyer Model. It’s kind of hard to wrap you head around the fact that I have him in a box on a shelf.

Back to the motto, everything happens for a reason. If it hadn’t been for my mom getting me riding lessons for my birthday when I was 6 years old and crossing paths with the Andalusian horse, it’s hard to say where I’d be today. If it hadn’t been for my dad’s support and crossing paths with our trainer, Sandy Shields, 20 years ago, I know Amandalusian Farm wouldn’t be what it is today. I am so thankful for the journey that this path has lead me down, the people I’ve met along the way and the horses that have entered my life to teach me what I know today.

John Brown – Director
John Brown was born and raised in Miami, FL and, like in a story book, ran off to the circus at 14 years old. In 1988, he got tired of life on the road and settled down in Sarasota, FL. He started Brown’s Tree Service, a landscaping company, which he continues to operate.

When asked how he got into horses, John says, “My wife, Simone, wanted to get a horse, specifically an Andalusian. I asked her what these horses cost and she told me around ten thousand dollars. I told her at that price we would never get one of them!”

Some 60 Andalusians later, John still has the Andalusian bug. He and Simone have owned some of the great ones, including Silverio, Gentil MOR, Amistad, Di Amore, Millenia TCV and Metalica – all National Champions. John saw the need for an organization that united the owners, breeders and trainers of this magnificent breed and encouraged showing. He is proud the first Alliance Grand National Championship Show was a success and looks forward to the future!
